Sometimes the Astronomy Photo of the day is a little more earthbound. This is a shot taken of the skies over Iceland. The combination of the flashing Aurora and glowing lava is spectacular.

SO AWESOME!!! I never get tired of seeing shots like this. Makes me forget all about all the mundane Earthbound crap for a few seconds. Surfing the solar winds...ahhh. (smile)
I feel so priveleged that I actually got to SEE the aurora one night. It was an August night in Chicago in the seventies. The northern lights weren't filled with the colors that one would expect in, say, Alaska. But we could see the shifting veils of light, and did not, at first, know what it was. When we finally figured out what we were looking at, we felt like we had been let in on some magical cosmic secret. I will never forget it. Lisa :-]
Native Oregonian Quaker/Celtic I'm working on it. When I figure it you'll be the first to know. Cat lover and gardener’s apprentice. Have been and still am a seeker trying to strike a balance between Christian heritage and the older European traditions.
